In another era, this book would probably have become one of those great American epics, right up there with Steinbeck and Faulkner. In the current era, it will probably be buried under novels about heavy-breathing vampires. Or maybe I just loved this book because I love dogs, and I love the idea of dogs that don’t pretend they can’t climb the stairs or play keep-away in the back yard when you’re already late for work. Time will tell.
